Job Description
Responsible for identification, correct disassembly, cleaning, decontamination, and reassembly of instruments used for various surgical procedures.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform instrument processing functions according to ANSI/AAMI Standards and SPSA’s published Work Instructions (WI’s) as well as Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s).
- Process incoming instruments in our controlled access Soil Sort (decontamination) area, while wearing appropriate PPE attire.
- Verify and accurately assemble instruments, per manufacturer’s IFU.
- Properly document missing instruments according to written SOPs.
- Ensure best care and handling practice of each customer owned item.
- Inspect and ensure that each instrument is in good working order prior to placing in tray or pack for shipment.
- Assembly and disassembly of instruments while maintaining all quality criteria.
- Effectively operate equipment such as washers, sterilizers, and other related equipment.
- Complete necessary paperwork and computer functions, as appropriate for daily work.
- Adhere to SPSA’s Quality standards.
- Make recommendations to management for possible improvement.
- Keep work area neat and clean.
- Effectively interface with operations personnel, distribution, and others as appropriate.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 2 years of instrument experience required. Must have working knowledge of how various instruments are used during surgical procedures. Previous Hospital, Surgery Center or Clinic Sterile Processing experience preferred.
EDUCATION:
High School diploma or GED required. Instrument Technician Certification preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
- General knowledge of surgical instruments.
- Must possess excellent communication skills.
- Knowledge of steam sterilization process.
- Knowledge of washer disinfectors and other related equipment.
- Have good manual dexterity and attention to detail.
- Must be able to multi-task.
- Must have or be willing to obtain necessary vaccines and testing required to work with soiled items.
- Basic knowledge of personal computer/data processing.
- Work effectively under pressure and within deadlines.
- Willing and capable of working with others.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers as appropriate.
- Ability to read and understand applicable Work Instructions and Standard Operating Procedures.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in a fast-paced indoor production area with little exposure to dust and high temperatures; moderate exposure to excessive noise; climate-controlled environment; and controlled access. Frequent exposure to bio-hazardous materials and strong odorous chemicals or elements.
